Scads of Quality

Richard Hull’s new paintings at Western Exhibitions are splendid. They are completely different than what he’s done before and they still look like him. It’s always informative to visit artists’ studios or see pictures of them and observe what art and reproductions they hang there. Over time those images creep into their work. Like here, where Hull’s new ‘portraits’ are loosely based on the ruffles in Velazquez’s Las Meninas. I can also project the influence of Francis Bacon. This work is masterful and entirely Hull’s. It’s exciting to see an artist you’ve long respected break new and fertile ground.

Neil Goodman’s show at Perimeter also shows new growth and a seasoned artist gaining confidence and fully hitting his stride with bold, seductive, considered sculptures and innovative advancements in the medium of bronze. Too often our society makes a priority of the young and the new, yet here are powerful examples of mid-career artists making some of the best work around.

Across the way at Albano, Margaret Wharton’s new wall pieces reveal her ever-expanding and evolving imagination and inspired use of common materials like clothes pins, nuts and bolts, tennis rackets and chairs. When working with found objects (a notion we’ll expand on in a moment), art must transcend its materials, as is exemplified here.

Perhaps that notion is true too at Tony Wight, where Matthew Metzger’s beautiful paintings are probably not inspired by 19th Century, trompe l’oiel master John Peto, as Metzger recreates and renders the most beautiful truck mud flaps I’ve ever seen. Sure, there’s a bunch of theory behind this work, which is art historical Windows 7 Product Key, relevant and fascinating, yet the paintings as objects themselves are seductive and captivating. Metzger’s work is paired with the photographs of Sreshta Rit Premnath whose reworked photographs are inspired by M.S. Ramaiah who believed that if he ever stopped building he would die. A bust of the builder has been photographed and manipulated in a poetic response.

Curious how most ArtLetters find a subplot or theme circulating through much of the work I preview. This week it’s art whose materials are recycled, reused or artfully replicate something in another medium — all of which can be found in the expansive show Chicago’s 12, insightfully curated by Sergio Gomez at the Zhou Bros’ southside art warehouse. This is a “green” exhibit focusing on artists who reuse, recycle and reconceptualize materials. It is fun, big, spacious and joyful.

The Hyde Park Art Center’s new exhibit Windows 7 Activation Key, Hairy Blob, opening Sunday, looks to be good, but I got there before 90 percent of the art was unwrapped, so I’m going to have to go back.

It was good to get back to the Ukrainian Institute Museum of Art where three Chicago artists and friends (Michiko Itatani, Claire Wolf Krantz and Susan Sensemann) participate in Mutuality, an uplifting presentation of mutual respect and synergistic art, that highlights the artists divergent experiences, source material, individual integrity and cooperative energy.

In the already-opened category Where to buy windows 7 key, Rashid Johnson’s significant, large-scale paintings at Chicago’s Museum of Contemporary Art are both beautiful and meaningful. As an artist I’ve previously been hard on for being too casual, I’m comfortable acknowledging that he has now found a powerful stride and ability to communicate a fresh and poignant look at his own history. From that base he draws in tangential and substantive content, and reveals himself as a force that is to be contended with and watched for years to come.

Consorting laws a crucial tool Scipione

Two high-ranking members of the Nomads bikie gang might never have been arrested without new NSW consorting legislation replica watches, the state's top cop says.

Strike Force Raptor officers nabbed two men after finding them together at a house in Pemulwuy, in southwest Sydney, on Thursday evening.

The men, who are aged 30 and 31 and said to be high-ranking members of the Nomads outlaw motorcycle club replica watches, had previously been warned for consorting.

NSW Police Commissioner Andrew Scipione told AAP it was the first application of amendments to the Crimes Act 1900, passed in April replica watches, that makes it an offence to habitually consort with people convicted of an indictable offence.

“I think it's going to be very important in terms of what we do,” he said.

“What's good about this is that it now gives police the tools they need to deal with people in consort.

“When I was a detective, and right up until this law was brought in, to deal with somebody under the consorting laws in NSW we needed to have seven bookings in six months – that was a very difficult get.”

He said the new legislation is being used as part of a proactive strategy in combating bikie gang-related crime.

Police Minister Mike Gallacher said the legislation had been updated to take mobile and internet communication into account.

“When the old consorting laws were put in place they didn't envisage mobile phones, emails, blackberries and that sort of technology,” he told AAP.

“What we have done in drafting this new legislation for the police is bring the concept of consorting to the modern world.”

The men charged on Thursday are due to appear in Downing Centre Local Court on June 27.

British played central role in foiled bomb operati

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – British intelligence played a central role in the undercover operation to foil an underwear bomb plot involving al Qaeda’s Yemeni offshoot, counterterrorism sources told Reuters.

The undercover informant in the plot linked to Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, or AQAP, was a British citizen, possibly of Saudi origin, the sources said on condition of anonymity. The informant was working in cooperation with Britain’s two principal spy agencies.

U.S. officials revealed publicly on Monday that AQAP tried to arm a suicide bomber with a non-metallic device that was an upgraded version of an “underwear bomb” that was carried on to a Detroit-bound plane on Christmas Day 2009, but failed to detonate.

The device that authorities seized in the undercover operation contained what was intended to be a more reliable detonating mechanism, counterterrorism officials said.

U.S. officials said earlier this week that the latest plot was foiled by the CIA and allied foreign intelligence services, without identifying the allies. British authorities put heavy pressure on the Obama administration not to disclose Britain’s role in the investigation.

Several U.S. media outlets reported that Saudi Arabia was the key partner in the operation.

But it turns out that British intelligence played what appears to be a more central role in foiling the plot to send a suicide bomber on to an airplane. The operation was a cooperative venture between Britain’s domestic and foreign intelligence services known as MI5 and MI6, officials told Reuters on condition of anonymity.

As details of the operation emerge, it appears to be a striking example of how U.S., European and Middle Eastern intelligence services cooperate on complex counterterrorism missions.

A spokesman for Britain’s Foreign Office declined to comment, saying that in such cases it never confirmed or denied the involvement of British intelligence. A spokesman for British intelligence also declined to comment.

LEAK INVESTIGATION

Several U.S. officials said the operation was severely disrupted when leaks of some of the details began to surface. Some officials said they believed the operation could have continued for at least another week or two if the leaks to the media had not occurred. They said the leaks could have compromised operational security.

Once the leaks began to surface, authorities began to wind up the undercover operation and the explosive device was handed over to the FBI, which is examining it at its lab at Quantico, Virginia.

Some officials expressed concern that there may be other prototypes of the improved underwear bomb in circulation. But U.S. officials said they were unaware of any current specific active plots or threats directed against the United States.

U.S. officials said they believed that there was no connection between the discovery of AQAP’s latest efforts to launch underwear bombers and the one-year anniversary earlier this month of the U.S. commando raid in which al Qaeda founder Osama bin Laden was killed at a hideout in Abbottabad, Pakistan.

U.S. officials say the seized underwear bomb bears the hallmarks of fugitive Saudi militant Ibrahim Hassan al-Asiri, suspected of being a master bomb-maker working with AQAP.

“He is very dangerous, he is smart, he is vicious. He’s the type of person that would put his own brother’s life at risk for the cause,” Representative C.A. “Dutch” Ruppersberger, the senior Democrat on the House intelligence committee, said.

“These are the type of individuals that get up in the morning and they are very smart, they are technical, and their whole focus is to attack the United States or our allies,” he said. “So he’s an enemy and we have to focus on him and we have to find him.”

Ruppersberger would not comment on British involvement in the operation to foil the plot Best Tattoo Gun, saying only: “It was a team effort with different countries.”

The director of National Intelligence opened an “internal review” of U.S. intelligence agencies to determine whether there were leaks of classified information related to the underwear bomb operation.

Separately, the FBI is conducting a separate criminal investigation into leaks Wholesale Tattoo Kits, a law enforcement official said.

Defense Secretary Leon Panetta, a former CIA director, condemned the leak of classified details about the Yemen operation Tattoo Kits, saying: “I am fully in favor of a full and thorough investigation of this matter.”

Both Panetta and Ruppersberger said leaks of classified information can hamper intelligence gathering.

“When these leaks take place, I can’t tell you how much they damage our ability to be able to pursue our intelligence efforts,” Panetta told reporters at the Pentagon.

“We are always concerned about leaks, leaks hurt our country, people could get killed, it hurts our credibility where people might not want to give us information or work with us because they are concerned that it will get out,” Ruppersberger said.

How Did a Phantom CS Degree Get on CEO’s Bio in S

Back in early 2008 when Scott Thompson got the job as president of eBay’s PayPal, the regulatory filing accurately listed his educational pedigree:

“Mr. Thompson holds a B.S. degree in Accounting from Stonehill College.”

The eBay filings over the next several years — until he left the online commerce giant for a much bigger job as CEO of Yahoo in January of this year — remained consistent.

But, curiously, Thompson’s bio on eBay’s Web site added an additional degree to his curriculum vitae for more than a half-dozen years, different from its Securities and Exchange Commission documents:

“Scott received a bachelor’s in accounting and computer science from Stonehill College.”

As it turned out, according to the Boston-area school, he had not gotten a computer science degree at all and graduated with the Bachelor’s of Science in Business Administration (Accounting).

An eBay spokesman I called today had no explanation for the discrepancy, except to note that its legal filings were correct and that it was an error due to the lack of cross-checking the Web bio, which was apparently posted by Thompson’s staff at the time.

Also without explanation — and perhaps more seriously — is that the false computer science degree claim somehow then made it into Yahoo’s SEC filings, as well as his Web site bio, when Thompson took the helm. (The inaccurate line about his schooling is in its latest filing and all others.)

Without providing further explanation of how it got there, Yahoo today called the mistake an “inadvertent error” and said it had no bearing on his ability to lead the Silicon Valley Internet giant.

But the long troubled company might be speaking too soon, given that the revelation was uncovered this morning by activist shareholder Dan Loeb of Third Point. Loeb has called into question the vetting process that Yahoo’s directors did to hire Thompson, as part of a proxy fight he is waging to gain several board seats.

And, while such an allegation is normal for an increasingly nasty battle, Loeb has hit his mark with deadly accuracy this time, putting into question both Thompson’s credibility and Yahoo’s obvious botching in its vetting of him.

“If there is a good explanation for the apparent discrepancies regarding the academic records of Mr. Thompson and Ms. Hart, we are confident that it will be provided promptly,” wrote Loeb in a letter to Yahoo’s board today. “However, in the event that there is no good explanation, we expect the Board to take immediate action.”

The Ms. Hart that Loeb was referring to is Patti Hart Herve Leger sale, the board member who ran Yahoo’s process for hiring a new CEO after it fired Carol Bartz — who does have a CS degree — last year. (In his letter today, Loeb also correctly called into question how she portrayed her own college degree in a more impressive fashion than was accurate.)

The search for a new Yahoo CEO was conducted by headhunter Heidrick & Struggles, which did not have Thompson on its list of candidates, since it had placed him at eBay many years before.

In fact, according to numerous sources, without involvement by Heidrick, it was Thompson who cold-emailed key Yahoo board members, nominating himself for the CEO job. He was quickly brought in for interviews and, presumably, a thorough vetting.

Despite that and despite the fact that eBay’s SEC filings did not list a computer science degree, Hart or others seem to have totally missed the discrepancies and it was added to Thompson’s official Yahoo bio and legal filings.

It’s not clear what happens next or if there are any legal implications, beyond a needed correction by Yahoo with the SEC — which already took the entire line about Thompson’s education off his Web bio today.

Yahoo’s not talking either, with its spokesperson declining to provide any explanation for its lapse or who had maintained that Thompson had that degree when he did not.

It’s essentially a mistakes-were-made-let’s-move-on defense.

I think not, for my part, and a number of prominent Silicon Valley people I spoke to today agreed that these issues tend to spin out of control.

“This is going to get very messy, very quickly,” said one person in a common sentiment I heard.

Maybe, and it’s not clear if the company has to release any details of how this occurred or if its board needs to investigate the situation.

In addition, Thompson himself is probably not at risk unless it can be definitely proved he was the one who misrepresented having the degree in the first place. He can simply say he had no idea who added it to the eBay Web site and that he did not notice it there on on the Yahoo Web site and SEC filings.

While that makes him look careless, how big a deal it becomes with shareholders, as well as Yahoo employees, is also an unknown. While a computer science degree is not a requirement for a CEO of a tech company — both Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg and Microsoft’s Bill Gates dropped out of college and did pretty well in computer science anyway — tech resume padding, even inadvertent, is not a characteristic that is going endear Thompson to anyone.

Plus, it just handed Loeb a very potent weapon in his fight against Yahoo, the very day after the company said the hedge fund manager’s expertise was not “relevant” to gaining a board seat.

One thing’s for sure: Loeb is most certainly very good at vetting.

Acura NSX meets Lamborghini – Click above for high-res image gallery

Full Disclosure: We have loved the Acura NSX since long before we were all smelling like teen spirit. The car will always hold a special place in our hearts, so the car you see above is particularly blasphemous in our eyes. Someone, at some point in history, looked at their reliable, capable near-supercar from Honda and thought, “You know what this needs? A little more Lamborghini Diablo.”

That person, then, evidently commenced to slather the lightweight Japanese hellion in enough fiberglass to convince your average passer-by that the car actually hails from Italy. As far as body kits go, this one is the real deal. The builder even went so far as to badge the brake calipers with Lamborghini script and plop a faux twelve-cylinder intake on top of the Japanese V6, even though it doesn’t appear to be bolted to anything.

Is it bad? Well, outwardly at least, it appears far more convincing than one might reasonably expect. But would we have been less insulted if were a Pontiac Fiero under that orange skin? Undoubtedly – but the builder at least gets points for creativity, as this is evidently a one-of-one proposition. If you dig it Replica DKNY Clothing, you can find this creation on eBay Motors with a Buy-It-Now price of $49,000 in Branson Discount Marc Jacobs Dresses, Missouri. The seller is willing to entertain offers. Thanks for the tip, Jesse!

First pic of Bugatti Veyron Bleu Centenaire emerge

Put one in the win column for Twitter as the first image of the special edition Bugatti Veyron being unveiled tomorrow at the Geneva Motor Show has just been uploaded. Called the Bleu Centenaire Cheap Herve leger strapless, this latest in a long line of special edition Veyrons commemorates the brand’s 100th anniversary. As such, it’s wearing a special shade of blue that you might remember seeing on the late, great EB 110, but is also the main color of Bugatti’s historical racing livery. Note, however, that the Bleu Cenenaire features both matte and glossy applications of the color on its body panels, which looks strange yet inexplicably cool to us.

We don’t yet know what changes have been made to this Veyron’s quad-turbo W16 engine, but rumors suggest that Bugatti has exceeded the engine’s current power rating of 1 Discount Marc Jacobs Dresses,000 hp by so much that the car’s top speed will crest 270 mph (a standard Bugatti Veyron tops out around 253). We’ll have to wait until tomorrow for more details and images, but we’re definitely interested in what may be the only vehicle that will ever look right at home in Papa Smurf’s personal garage.

SpeculatedVolkswagen’s mid-engine future

Fortitude has gone through the trouble of cutting through all of the rumors surrounding the future of mid-engined sports cars in the Volkswagen family. The site points to two different mid-engine platforms currently in development within the expansive Volkswagen ranks – one with a longitudinally-mounted engine layout and another with a transverse engine design. A number of models could make use of the side-saddle architecture, including the much-salivated-over Volkswagen BlueSport Buy Marc Jacobs Dresses, though Fortitude says the chassis could also provide the bones for vehicles like a Porsche 914 or 356 successor as well as a new Audi racer that could sail under the R3 banner.

And what of that longitudinal design, you ask? This is where things get really fun. Fortitude says that the high-ups at Audi AG showed off a platform called the MSS on the hush-hush, and that the chassis could underpin everything from the next R8 to the Lamborghini Gallardo successor and the Porsche 918. It could even form the mold for whatever steps into the void left by the Murcielago.
